ENTER CHAPTER MENU OF TRACE EXPERIMENTS

Overview
In this text, we use Ethereal, an open source network protocol analyzer, to examine traces of real network activity. Ethereal is free software released under the GNU General Public License. You are free to install Ethereal on as many computers as you like without paying any license fee. You can get more information about Ethereal from http://www.ethereal.com.

Once Ethereal is installed, navigate to "home.html" on the CD. Choose a trace file to open from the Chapter Menu of Trace exercises.

You may want to consider associating the Ethereal executable with all files ending in .cap so that Ethereal starts automatically when you click on a trace file in your browser. In many systems, you can do this by right clicking on a trace file and choosing Open With. When you choose to open a file with Ethereal, choose to always open files of this type with the same executable.

Supported Platforms
Ethereal runs on many popular computing platforms. On this CD, we have included including installers for Windows 98/ME/2000/XP/2003, Red Hat Linux/Fedora, and Solaris. Packages for many other platforms including Apple Macintosh, other Linux distributions and other UNIX variants are also available for download at http://www.ethereal.com/download.html.

Versions
New versions of Ethereal are released frequently by the Ethereal developers. We have included Windows versions 0.10.0 and 0.10.7. The latest version is the recommended installation. Although the screen shots and instructions used in the text were generated using version 0.10.0, you should be able to make slight modifications to the latest version 0.10.7 with little problem. The version 0.10.0 for RedHat/Fedora and 0.10.6 for Solaris were the latest versions for each of those platforms respectively.

You can always download the most recent copy of Ethereal from http://www.ethereal.com/download.html.

Capturing Traces
In order to capture your own traces under Windows, you will need to install WinPcap,a packet capture driver, in addition to Ethereal itself. We have included WinPcap version 3.0 on this CD. You can consult the WinPcap web site at http://winpcap.polito.it/ for more information and the latest versions.

Source Code
We have also included copies of the Ethereal source code. You may find you are interested in examining the source code to see how Ethereal itself works.

Users Manual
We have also included the latest User's Guide to Ethereal.
